The Homeschooling Image
In 1996, which now seems about a century ago, I published a little booklet called The Homeschooling Image: Public Relations Basics. It was a collection of everything I knew about writing for publication, formatting press releases, putting on homeschool info nights, and anything else I could think of for anyone working to improve the public’s perception of homeschooling.
I printed a few hundred copies, sold quite a few, and eventually gave the rest to the National Home Education Network (NHEN). Still, every few months, I get inquiries about whether it’s still available, and I’ve finally decided that the time has come to do something about that.
I dug around a bit and discovered that I no longer had any electronic copies of the contents—not too surprising since it was written at least four computers ago. (I think the last time I remember having copies of the files, they were on a Zip disk.) So I resigned myself to typing it all again, revising here and there as I tapped away.
It’s surprising to reread now—emailed press releases were somewhat frowned upon then, and businesses who put their web URLs in their ads were perhaps a bit pretentious. Blogs were unheard of. But there’s a lot of good information in that little booklet, and with a few judicious updates, it should be as useful as ever.
